GETTING AROUND MILAN BY CAR 🚗 - OUR TIPS
Important premise
The apartment is in a very central area, and located in a ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone). This is why it is IMPORTANT not to drive Via Cesare da Sesto (the street of the apartment) by car: this is a restricted traffic street and you will get a ticket. This prohibition applies at all times and at all days of the year.
Area B and Area C
In Milan, Area B and Area C are two limited traffic zones (ZTLs) introduced to reduce air pollution and traffic in the city center by encouraging the use of public transportation or environmentally friendly means of transport.
Area B 🌱
- What it is: It is a limited traffic access zone for the most polluting vehicles. It is active over a very large area that covers practically all of Milan.
- Hours: It is active from Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., excluding holidays.
- Vehicles involved: Only vehicles that meet certain environmental standards (Euro 4 or higher for gasoline and Euro 5 or higher for diesel) can enter. Vehicles with Euro 4 and lower diesel engines, or those with Euro 0, Euro 1, or Euro 2 gasoline engines, cannot enter Area B. Electric and hybrid cars, as well as CNG or LPG cars, have free access.
Area C (Congestion Charge) 💰
- What it is: It is a limited traffic zone in the center of Milan.
- Hours: It operates Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 7:30 pm. It is suspended on public holidays.
- Toll: To access Area C, you must pay a daily toll (a ticket that can be purchased through the website, SMS or at Tabacchi, stores selling stamps and cigarettes found throughout the city and distinguished by the T posted outside the store at street level). The cost of the toll may vary depending on vehicle category, with different rates for cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles.
- Vehicles Involved: Vehicles with free (free) access are those with low emissions (e.g., electric and hybrid cars, with CO2 emissions below 50 g/km), while more polluting vehicles are subject to toll charges.
Parking 🅿️
Option 1: On-street on Viale Papiniano: this is outside Area C and on the boulevard there is usually parking on the blue stripes or between the trees; the blue stripes are metered during business hours, including Saturdays (2€/hour which can be paid at the pay stations that are every 100 meters or so where there are blue stripes, or via EasyPark app). There is a local market on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and cars must be removed from the parking spaces under the trees in the center of the street as early as early morning.
Option 2: The paid parking Lombardia Parking at Via Ariberto 4, a 5-minute walk from the apartment. This is guarded and costs 29€ or 49€ per night, depending on the size of the car. This parking lot is inside the Area C/Congestion Charge: you will have to pay them for Area C or get instructions to pay at Tabacchi.
